Park Board Approves Mastenbrook Grant for Great Falls Grange

Great Falls GrangeThe Fairfax County Park Authority Board approved a Mastenbrook Grant request from the Great Falls Grange Foundation (GFGF) in the amount of $20,000 to help install a municipal-connected water line to service the Great Falls Grange. The action was taken during the regular meeting of the Park Board on Wednesday, July 27, 2022.

In April 2022 the Park Authority and the Great Falls Grange Foundation entered into an agreement which permits GFGF to operate and maintain the historic property. The Grange was built in 1929 as a public assembly hall and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The overall vision for this site is to serve the community as a self-supporting gathering place, a location for classes and a place to hold special events. To support these expanded uses, GFGF is undertaking internal building improvements, new landscaping and other enhancements.

To prepare the facility for these expanded uses, a critical first step is to install a water line connected to municipal water. The project includes installation of a yard hydrant behind the Grange, which would be attached to the well. The water would be considered non-potable and its primary use would be to water landscaping. The total project costs would run approximately $41,000, of which the Mastenbrook grant would provide about half the funding.

Approval of this grant leaves approximately $13,000 available in the Mastenbrook grant fund. Additional allocations to support this program are anticipated via park bonds.

Since 1999, the Mastenbrook Grant Program has awarded approximately $1.98 million in grants for projects valued at more than $14.7 million. Grants ranging from a few hundred dollars to the maximum of $20,000 have funded such projects as trail improvements, construction of gazebos and shelters, playgrounds, and athletic field improvements.
