Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day in the Park!

BirdsThe national commemoration of World Migratory Bird Day is set for May 13. Did you know that Fairfax County is located underneath Eastern Flyway? When you look skyward, you have a great view of the bird Interstate 95! It is peak migration time and many birds we rarely see in our area are making their way north as the weather gets warmer.

Fairfax County parks offer great vantage points and a variety of habitats to see a wide range of bird species. Park Authority naturalists possess the expertise and resources to assist birdwatchers of all skill levels in identifying and learning about many species that travel through the county in their bi-annual flights. Don’t miss this great opportunity to commemorate World Migratory Bird Day in the park! Here’s a few ideas for how you can participate:

Wetlands Awareness Day at Huntley Meadows Park (May 7, noon to 4 p.m.): This year’s theme for World Migratory Bird Day focuses on the importance of water. Wetlands, rivers, lakes, streams, marshes and ponds are essential for feeding, drinking and nesting. Enjoy exploring the beauty of Fairfax County’s premier wetland sanctuary at Huntley Meadow Park. There is no cost to participate.

Basics of Birding at Turner Farm Park (May 13, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.): Watching birds is a great way to connect with the natural world around us. Tour the park on foot developing your birding skills with the help of a printed guide and learn about other birding resources in the classroom. Binoculars recommended; a few pairs will be available for use. This activity is for individuals ages 10 and up. Enrollment is $16 per person.

Birds Teach the Physics of Flight at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park (May 13, 1:30 to 3 p.m.): Explore the physics of flight that birds have mastered. Experiment with wing shapes and designs that provide advantages for birds to migrate, hunt, and survive in varied habitats. Get hands-on investigation time with real feathers of different shapes, colors, sizes and designs. Enrollment is $10 per person.

Beginning Birdwatching & More at Lake Accotink Park (May 14, 11 a.m. to noon): Borrow child or adult binoculars for a view of outdoor bird feeding stations. Learn identification tips by sight and sound and how to make your yard more attractive to preferred species. Enrollment is $7 per person.

Birding for Beginners at Huntley Meadows Park (May 14, 8 to 11 a.m.): Learn about the park's birds and some basic identification skills. This program for beginners starts with a bird identification discussion. Enrollment is $19 per person.

Radical Raptors at Burke Lake Park (May 14, 1 to 2 p.m.): Join a naturalist to search for signs of raptors and explore what makes them different from other birds. Enrollment is $8 per person.
