Hooray for Bollywood

8/17/2019 7:00 pm to 8/17/2019 8:00 pm

Event Description

Hooray for BollywoodHooray for Bollywood brings all the color and glitter of the Indian film industry to the stage. The performance, presented by Silk Road Dance Company and guest artists, pays homage to the vibrant dance sequences so popular in Indian movies. The talents of diverse artists and their sumptuous costumes makes for a dance extravaganza that promises to have the audience up and dancing in by the finale. The term “Bollywood” refers to India’s enormous film industry that is located in Bombay, the city now known as Mumbai.  Although Bollywood choreographies originally drew from classical Indian dance and folk forms, other dance genres such as jazz, hip hop, and belly dance have recently begun to influence the movie dance sequences.  Ranging from classical to contemporary genres, the choreographies feature music from beloved Bollywood films like Bride and Prejudice, Mangal Pandey, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Slumdog Millionaire.  Hooray for Bollywood celebrates these dance styles from the ebullient Hindi-language films of Mumbai, visiting some of the humorous, joyous, and poignant scenes most common in Indian film choreographies – including a wedding!    Founded in 1995 by Artistic Director Dr. Laurel Victoria Gray, the award-winning Silk Road Dance Company (SRDC) presents traditional and contemporary women's dances from Central Asia, the Middle East, South Asia, and the Caucasus. Their pioneering performances offer a unique glimpse of the life and art of little-known cultures, especially the Islamic world. Silk Road Dance Company has performed internationally in Uzbekistan, Qatar, Singapore, UK and Canada; nationally they have performed in the states of California, Texas, Washington, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, Michigan, Maryland, New Jersey, Georgia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. The ensemble has danced at some of the most prestigious venues in the Washington DC area, including the White House, the Kennedy Center and the Library of Congress.
