Iranian Persian Cultural Heritage Night

6/22/2019 7:30 pm to 6/22/2019 8:30 pm

Event Description

Iranian Persian Cultural Heritage NightJourney with Silk Road Dance Company to discover the rich dance traditions of the old Persian Empire and modern-day Iran. These dances reflect a tapestry of cultures from a widely-varied geography, from the Caspian Sea in the north, to the Persian Gulf in the south. The scope of Persian dance ranges from the joyous abandon of folk celebrations to the nuanced elegance of the Qajar court.  Lavish costumes, compelling music, and captivating choreography will enchant audiences and offer a glimpse into the soul of an ancient people. From their very founding in 1995, the award-winning Silk Road Dance Company (SRDC) has worked closely with the Iranian-American community. The ensemble has been engaged to perform at weddings and festivals, as well present authentic folklore at museums and universities. Silk Road Dance Company has twice been featured at Toronto’s Tirgan Iranian Arts Festival, an event that draws over 100,000 attendees. They were featured artists at the historic 2015 White House Nowruz Celebration which officially acknowledged this traditional Iranian holiday. Silk Road Dance Company has performed internationally in Uzbekistan, Qatar, Singapore, UK and Canada; nationally they have performed in sixteen states and at some of the most prestigious venues in the Washington DC area, including the State Department, the Kennedy Center and the Library of Congress. Artistic Director Dr. Laurel Victoria Gray, who teaches Global Dance History at George Washington University, brings a depth of understanding to her choreographies and productions based on her decades of field research and study.
