COMING THIS FALL – A NEW LOOK FOR LAKE ACCOTINK PARK PLAYGROUND!

The Fairfax County Park Authority is set to begin work on the installation of a new playground at Lake Accotink Park, with construction activities slated to begin on or about Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023, weather permitting. The work is expected to be completed in Fall 2023.

Since 1995, the Lake Accotink playground, located just behind the carousel, has served as a wonderful and fun attraction for young park visitors. The playground was removed on May 2, 2023, after it was deemed unsafe for use by a licensed playground inspector. The new playground will be installed within the same geographic footprint where the previous playground was placed. There will be no impact to the surrounding trees and landscape.

The design of the new playground was intended to replace the previously existing play equipment with similar activities to include a mix of accessible and traditional play equipment as much as the space would allow. We anticipate a robust community engagement process in conjunction with the master planning process which may include a larger playground with enhanced accessibility features outside of the floodplain within the park.

NEW PLAYGROUND FEATURES

The new playground will feature a variety of equipment for children of all ages and abilities upon a wood-fiber mulch surface (an approved ADA accessible surface for playgrounds). The design will feature a tower play structure with a winding slide, boulder climber, four swings, net climber, playhouse, dragonfly teeter-totter, musical panels and tactile and visual features to provide children with a wide variety of play experiences.

Special Note: The rendering above is provided only to showcase the features of the new playground. The lawn and trees in the image do not precisely emulate the features surrounding the site at Lake Accotink Park.
