Welcome October with a Family Night around the Campfire

Campfires will be blazing in Fairfax County parks the first week in October with family programs that feature wagon rides, s’mores, animals and the Harvest Moon.

Ellanor C. Lawrence Park offers campfire programs on Wednesday, October 4 and Thursday, October 5, 2017.

On Wednesday night from 6:30 to 8 p.m., take a wagon ride through the Rocky Run Stream Valley and enjoy a turkey hot dog roasted over a campfire. Learn about the area’s local and natural history as you ride and dine. We provide hot dogs, buns, condiments and s’mores. Bring your own drinks and sides. This program is for participants age two to adult. The cost is $10 per person, and children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Meet at Cabell’s Mill.

On Thursday night, Ellanor C. Lawrence Park hosts a Harvest Moon campfire. Learn about the colorful Harvest Moon’s science and history and why Native Americans and colonists used it to indicate harvest time. Enjoy s’mores around the campfire. This program from 7:30 to 9 p.m. is for participants age two to adult. The cost is $8 per person.

On Friday, October 6, Hidden Pond Nature Center offers another installment in its Campfire Fridays program. Each session features a different topic and a different area of the park will be explored. Wrap up the evening with s’mores by the campfire. The program for participants age three to adult runs from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and the cost is $8 per person.

Hidden Oaks Nature Center will be telling tales around the campfire on Sunday, October 8. Hear stories that feature bats, owls and other Halloween creatures from 7 to 8 p.m. as you roast marshmallows. This program is for participants age four to adult.
