Historical Zoning Ordinances

Fairfax County has adopted three different Zoning Ordinance with the first Zoning Ordinance adopted in 1941, the second adopted in 1959, and the current Zoning Ordinance adopted in 1978. With the adoption of each Zoning Ordinance by the Board of Supervisors, the previous Zoning Ordinance was superseded with the new Ordinance and new zoning districts were created. As such, the entire County was rezoned with the adoption of each new Zoning Ordinance. Each Zoning Ordinance had multiple amendments and reprints between the year of adoption and the next adopted Zoning Ordinance. Copies of the base Ordinances as originally adopted and some of the reprints are contained below. To determine which Zoning Ordinance provisions were in effect at a particular time, contact the Zoning Administration Division at 703-324-1314.
