Project Update: August 18, 2021

Project Update: August 17, 2021: The new force main construction along Eaglebrook Court, the connection/bypass vault, were completed in early summer. Recently the contractor repaired a small sink hole in Eaglebrook Court. The paving will be repaired soon, completing all the work on site.

Project Background

This force main was identified as being in critical need for replacement during a condition assessment study that was conducted in July 2011. The existing 8-inch diameter cast iron force main was installed in 1959.

Project Description

The project will replace approximately 625 linear feet of 8-inch diameter sanitary sewer force main located in the Waynewood community in Alexandria, Virginia. The new force main will be installed within the right-of-way of Eaglebrook Court and outfall to an existing gravity sewer located at the intersection of Eaglebrook Court and Waynewood Boulevard. A new driveway will also be installed at the existing sanitary sewer pumping station located at 8712 Eaglebrook Court.

Project Location

The project is located on Eaglebrook Court between the existing sanitary sewer pumping station at 8712 Eaglebrook Court and the intersection of Waynewood Boulevard.

Project Phase

The project was awarded for construction to Flippo Construction in late May 2020. A pre-construction site visit was conducted on June 8, 2020. Construction activities onsite began in August 2020 and the project is scheduled to be substantially completed in May 2021.

Project Benefits

The benefits of the project are:

  • Relocates a section of existing force main from private properties. The new force main, once it leaves the pump station property, will be located entirely within the VDOT right-of-way.
  • Replaces the existing cast iron force main. The existing force main poses a high probability of causing damage to private properties if it were to fail. Installing the new force main will eliminate that risk.

Construction activity is expected to begin in July or August 2020 and be substantially completed in December 2020.

What to expect

Once the site work begins, Flippo will begin installing the new force main along Eaglebrook Drive and a new driveway at the pump station. Installation of the new force main will require closure of sections of Eaglebrook Court as the force main is installed along Eaglebrook Court. The lane closures will be limited to 9 AM to 3:30 PM Monday through Friday. Installation of the new manhole at the intersection of Eaglebrook Court and Waynewood Boulevard will also result in a brief lane closure. Flaggers will direct traffic during the periods of lane closures. Once the new force main installation is completed, Flippo Construction will abandon the existing force main by filling it with grout.

Project cost and funding source

Construction of the Waynewood II Force Main Rehabilitation is valued at $711,650. Wastewater construction projects are funded through the county’s Capital Improvement Program.
