County Chesapeake Bay Action Plan Approved

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) reviewed and approved Fairfax County’s Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) action plan on August 15, 2017.

Receiving approval from DEQ for the TMDL action plan represents a giant step forward in cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay,” said James Patteson P.E., Director, Department of Public Works and Environmental Services. “I’m very proud of all of the employees throughout the county whose hard work made the approval possible."

The county holds a Virginia Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (VPDES) MS4 Permit number VA 0088587. The action plans developed by staff will result in annual reductions of pollutants that are of concern:

Pollutant of Concern

Annual Load Reduction
(lbs. per year)

Percentage of L2 Reduction
Achieve After Implementation

Total Nitrogen

35,736.26

60.4

Total Phosphorus

7,459.92

115.3

Total Suspended Solids

The county’s draft sediment, PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl) and bacterial TMDL action plans were presented at public meetings in December 2016. A reduction plan was created for each pollutant. The plan, in its entirety, is here.

The MS4 permit coordination leader, Kate Bennett, said, “Thank you to everyone who contributed to the plan. From delineating the service area and quantifying the required reductions, to implementing projects and calculating the percentages of reductions.”
