FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. –  In early January crews will mobilize to begin the major portion of work to repair a segment of broken pipe in the Sugarland Run Stream that created a sewage leak.

The leak was detected in early December. Since the discovery a temporary bypass has been in place to prevent wastewater from entering the broken pipe segments and to prevent sanitary sewer overflows.

Soon materials will arrive on site to permanently repair the pipe from manhole to manhole, or 230 feet.

When the upcoming phase of the project begins there may be some restrictions near the construction site.

  • Basketball court in the park behind Sugar Maple Drive will be closed.
  • Bicyclists may need to walk their bikes in certain areas.

The trails near the basketball court will remain open, however, users are encouraged to adhere to posted signage for detours and alternate routes.

Those who come near the construction area should be mindful of heavy equipment and construction vehicles.

Construction is expected to last approximately three months, completing in April.
