Annual Awards for Exceptional Erosion and Sediment Control and Tree Preservation Presented

On Feb. 22, 2019, Fairfax County recognized contractors, developers, engineers, engineering firms and site superintendents whose projects best demonstrate excellence in erosion and sediment control design and implementation or a commitment to tree preservation and planting in Fairfax County.

Throughout calendar year 2018, judges from NVSWCD assessed a total of 20 nominated sites in seven categories for their excellence in implementing erosion and sediment control measures.  As a result, the following sites were recognized with awards: 

Large Single Family Residential: Rivermont, and West Oaks Corner, Phase I (Honorable Mention)
Small Single Family Residential: Fairfax Farm II
Large Commercial: Expectation Church
Infill Lot: Harvey W. Fox, Lot 5
Special Projects: Full Cry Farm

The sediment trap at Full Cry Farm intercepts and retains runoff from the site, allowing the majority of the sediment to settle out of the stormwater prior to it being released.

 

 

 

 


In addition, the following outstanding engineering firm, superintendent, contractor, and developer/owner  were recognized with awards for the demonstrated quality of their erosion and sediment control plan, implementation, construction and maintenance, respectively:

Outstanding Engineering Firm: Christopher Consultants for Rivermont
Outstanding Superintendent (Project Manager):  Mark Field for Rivermont
Outstanding Contractors: William A. Hazel for Rivermont, and Santos Sorto for Harvey W. Fox, Lot 5 (Honorable Mention)
Outstanding Developer/ Owner: Basheer & Edgemoore for Rivermont

Diversion fencing at the Rivermont community helps to demark the tree protection area from constructed stormwater management controls.
 
 
 
 
 

This year the Best Protected Environmentally Sensitive Site was awarded to:  Basheer Edgemoore for Rivermont and Botero Homes, LLC for Harvey W. Fox, Lot 5 (Honorable Mention).

The Land Conservation Awards program provides a meaningful recognition to organizations and individuals for exemplary examples of erosion and sedimentation control during construction through a strong partnership between Fairfax County DPWES – Land Development Services, Site Development and Inspection Division and NVSWCD.

The Tree Commission and Urban Forestry Management Division of the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services also presented awards for Tree Preservation to recognize those developers and builders who have gone above and beyond basic requirements preserving trees on a project they have constructed and awards for Tree Planting and Landscaping are presented to recognize those developers who have gone above and beyond basic requirements replacing trees that were unavoidably harmed or destroyed due to development.
