CALL TO ORDER:
Commission Chair Gloria Crawford called the Wednesday, February 2, 2022, Commission Meeting to order at 7:30 P.M.
Approval of Agenda: It was moved by Commissioner Malik and seconded by Commissioner Salinas that the February 2, 2022 Agenda be approved as presented. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
Approval of Minutes: It was moved by Commissioner Salinas and seconded by Commissioner Conde that the December 15, 2021 Minutes be approved as amended. The motion passed by majority vote with commissioners Shipman and Malik abstaining.
STAFF ISSUES: Director Saunders informed the Commissioners that OHREP has hired two new Investigators and an Intake/Outreach Coordinator, all of whom will begin on February 14th.
COMMISSION BUSINESS:
HRC #2019062H & HRC #2020036H – Mobley, Charissa v. Passco Parker DST, Bozzuto Management Company, and Christine Barrett -- Charge of Discrimination: It was moved by Commissioner Solon and seconded by Commissioner Salinas that the Commission issue a Charge of Discrimination on HRC #2019062H and HRC #2020036H. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
HRC #2021063H – Suarez Rocabado, Claudia & Victor, Eric v. Yung T. Helena,
and Yung, Ling -- FIR: It was moved by Commissioner Bell- Krasner and seconded by Commissioner Shumaker that this complaint be dismissed due to insufficient evidence that a violation of the Human Rights Ordinance has occurred consistent with the recommendation of OHREP. The motion passed by majority vote with Commissioner Solon opposing and Commissioner Conde abstaining.
COMMUNITY CONCERNS: Commissioner Crawford thanked Commissioner Conde for volunteering for outreach to the community on the mission of the Office of Human Rights commission and OHREP. Commissioner Crawford also mentioned to the Commission that Commissioner Hudson serves as the Vice President of the Virginia Association of Human Rights.
PENDING BUISNESS: Plaque in Honor of Commissioner George Alber— Commissioner Salinas suggested that the word “incomparable” be changed to “impelling.” All the Commissioners agreed to this change. Director Saunders informed the Commissioners that Supervisor McKay will tape a presentation and send a copy to George Alber’s wife. Director Saunders will update the Commission once the plaque is completed and send a copy of the DVD to the Commissioners.
NEW BUSINESS: Commissioner Solon a presented a speech regarding “Informal Justice” and informed the Commissioners that he will send a link to this speech.
The meeting adjourned at 8:44 p.m.
