An Overview of Emerging Communications Technologies

The communications industry has undergone significant changes over the years, and is making technological advances that have led to more choices for consumers. These new technologies are developing at an increasingly rapid pace -- allowing cable television and telephone companies to offer more than their customary services.

Consumers can now get telephone, cable, and high speed internet services -- often called the “Triple Play” -- from the same provider. By ordering these services in a “bundle” you can save money and consolidate your bills. But is this the right choice for you?

Currently, there are three competing cable TV providers in Fairfax County -- Comcast, Cox, and Verizon. All three offer “Triple Play” services to all or some residents of the county. This now provides consumers with more choices of cable TV providers, and more choices of services offered. But the question is “how to choose?”

With these new technologies, as with all new technologies, there are both pros and cons. Armed with all of the pertinent facts, you can make more informed choices.

The "Connecting Your Home" resources include descriptions of some of the technologies and services available, some of the advantages and disadvantages of these technologies, and provider contact information.
