Election Officer Training Schedule


 

Inclement Weather Information

In the event that Fairfax County Government Offices close due to inclement weather, training will be cancelled. For additional information on operating status, please call the Fairfax County Government Emergency Information Line at 703-817-7771. Information is also available through the County’s website, Twitter (www.twitter.com/fairfaxcounty) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/fairfaxcounty).

Registrants for cancelled classes may re-enroll in a later class. Classes will also be cancelled in the event of facility closures, i.e., power outages, etc. The Office of Elections will make every effort to contact registrants prior to a cancellation.

2016 Training Schedule - November 8, 2016 General Election

Note: ALL Election Officers must be retrained this year for their State-mandated 4-year training.


New Election Officer Training (NEW) required for New Election Officers who have not attended training.

  • Tuesday, May 17 at 6:00 p.m. - Dolley Madison Library, McLean
  • Wednesday, May 25 at 9:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. - Mount Vernon Governmental Center, Alexandria

Experienced Officer Training (EXP). Required for all returning Election Officers in 2016.*

  • Thursday, May 19 at 6:00 p.m. - Dolley Madison Library, McLean

*If you are a returning officer who last trained in 2014 or thereafter then you must take this training (for example, if you served in the November 2014 General Election, or the November 2015 General Election).

 


Chief and Assistant Chief Training (CHIEF) for Election Officers who are serving as Chief or Assistant Chief for the first time and have already received their assignment from the Office of Elections.

  • Classes will be made available in 2016; TBA

Pre-Election Training (PRE) is Mandatory. Required for all Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs. At training, Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs are sworn in and pick-up their Election Day supplies.

General Machine and Electronic Pollbook Training (EPB) Optional for Election Officers who would like additional practice.

  • Classes may be made available in 2016; please note this session is informal, and not designed to instruct or replace NEW or EQUIP training; TBD

Registration is not necessary for this class type.

Training Class Acronyms/Class Length

  • EXP - Required for all returning Election Officers who have not trained in 2016. 3 hours
  • NEW - Required for all New Election Officers who have not previously attended training, approx. 3 hours
  • EPB - Optional for Election Officers who have attended either EXP or NEW training and prefer additional training on Electronic Pollbooks, approx. 2 hours
  • CHIEF - Optional for Election Officers who are serving as Chief and Assistant Chief for the first time; have already received their assignment and have attended EQUIP training this fall,  approx. 2 hours
  • PRE - Required, Chief and Assistant Chief overview and supply pick-up, approx. 2 hours

  1. Provide your name and phone number
  2. Indicate your 1st class choice (you will only be contacted if your 1st choice is not available)

*If you have not yet applied to be an Election Officer, also include your home address and that you are “new”*

Note: Training is mandatory for all new (NEW) Election Officers. New voting equipment training classes (EQUIP) are mandatory for all Election Officers. All other training classes are optional except PRE, mandatory Chief briefing.

For Returning Election Officers
Training Class: EXP 
Who Should Attend? Returning Election Officers who previously trained before 2016
Class Duration: 2 hours and 30 minutes

For New Election Officers
Training Class: NEW
Who Should Attend?
New Election Oficers who have not previously attended training
Class Duration: 3 hours

For Chief and Assistant Chief Officers
Training Class: CHIEF
Who Should Attend? Election Officers who are serving as Chief of Assistant Chief for the first time; have already received their assignment and have attended EXP training

2 hours

Who Should Attend? 
All assigned Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs and Stand-by Chiefs; always held the week before the election
