Election Officer Training Schedule


Inclement Weather Information

In the event that Fairfax County Government Offices close due to inclement weather, training will be cancelled. For additional information on operating status, please call the Fairfax County Government Emergency Information Line at 703-817-7771. Information is also available through the County’s website, Twitter (www.twitter.com/fairfaxcounty) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/fairfaxcounty).

Registrants for cancelled classes may re-enroll in a later class. Classes will also be cancelled in the event of facility closures, i.e., power outages, etc. The Office of Elections will make every effort to contact registrants prior to a cancellation.

2017 Training Schedule

 New Election Officer Training (NEW) required for New Election Officers who have not attended training.

  • Monday, September 25 at 2:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. - Mount Vernon Governmental Center (Alexandria)
  • Tuesday, September 26 at 9:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., or 6:00 p.m. - Mount Vernon Governmental Center (Alexandria)
  • Wednesday, September 27 at 9:00 a.m. - Mount Vernon Governmental Center (Alexandria)
  • Tuesday, October 3 at 9:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. - Fairfax County Government Center
  • Wednesday, October 4 at 2:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. - Fairfax County Government Center
  • Thursday, October 5 at 9:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., or 6:30 p.m. - Fairfax County Government Center
  • Saturday, October 7 at 9:00 a.m. - Fairfax County Government Center

Experienced Officer Training (EXP). Required for returning Election Officers who did not train in 2016. If you trained in 2016 then you do not need to take additional training at this time.

Chief and Assistant Chief Training (CHIEF) for Election Officers who are serving as Chief or Assistant Chief for the first time and have already received their assignment from the Office of Elections.

Pre-Election Training (PRE) is mandatory for all Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs, regardless of experience. Only those serving as Chief or Assistant Chief (active and stand-by) will be admitted. In addition to the training provided, officers will be sworn in and pick-up their Election Day supplies. Training will take approximately 2 hours and officers are required to attend the full 2 hours.

General Machine and Electronic Pollbook Training (EPB) Optional for Election Officers who would like additional practice.

Training Class Acronyms/Class Length

  • EXP - Required for all returning Election Officers who have not trained in 2016. 3 hours
  • NEW - Required for all New Election Officers who have not previously attended training, approx. 3 hours
  • EPB - Optional for Election Officers who have attended either EXP or NEW training and prefer additional training on Electronic Pollbooks, approx. 2 hours
  • CHIEF - Optional for Election Officers who are serving as Chief and Assistant Chief for the first time; have already received their assignment and have attended EXP training this fall, approx. 2 hours
  • PRE - Required, Chief and Assistant Chief overview and supply pick-up, approx. 2 hours

How to Register (Registration is Required):

The Fairfax County Office of Elections now offers an exciting new way for Election Officers to register for training: PollChief. This service allows an Officer to:

  • Sign up to serve as an Election Officer and submit availability for each election.

  • Verify and update personal information.

  • Select training classes.

  • Receive and confirm precinct assignments.

  • Receive important election information through emails and text messages.

What do I do if I have a PollChief account?

If you already have a PollChief account, please login to set your training date/time. If you are not sure, especially if you have served in 2016 or prior, please contact us.

What do I do if I have never served an election in Fairfax County?

If you have never served an election in Fairfax County, please signup for a PollChief account. Please note that we are currently experiencing technical issues with our mobile website; if you have difficulty registering a new account from your phone or tablet, please try the process through a desktop computer if possible, or contact us for assistance.

Note: Training is mandatory for all new (NEW) Election Officers. Returning Officer training classes (EXP) are mandatory for all current Election Officers. All other training classes are optional except PRE, mandatory Chief briefing.
