- Summer Reading Program Reaches More than 45,000 Children
The library’s 2009 Summer Reading Program attracted 48,800 Fairfax County children who read more than 325,000 books. The Chantilly Regional Library had the highest number of participants at 2,563. Programs are planned each summer throughout the library to complement the reading; more than 29,000 children, from preschoolers through teens, attended more than 600 programs in June, July and August.
The Summer Reading Program is planned in partnership with the Fairfax County Public Schools. Community sponsors provide funding and incentives to make the program possible including offering coupons and discounts in the coupon book worth $4,829,400. Children who read the required number of books earn the coupon book and get free ice cream, free tickets to sporting events and activities and discounts for other items.
Katie Strotman, who coordinates the Summer Reading Program, said “Even in tough economic times, our sponsors stepped forward and recognized the importance of literacy and reading in Fairfax County by providing an incentive for the children. Their generosity is very much appreciated.”
Many library Friends groups support the Summer Reading Program through donations, including $42,500 from the Friends of the George Mason Regional Library and $9,000 from the Friends of the Kings Park Library. The Fairfax Library Foundation funds the printing of the coupon book. The goals of the program are to keep kids reading during the summer to keep up their skills and to read for pleasure.

On Sept. 12 the foundation hosted the reception and live auction at the George Mason University Mathy House, home of the president of George Mason University, Alan Merten and his wife Sally.
The fundraiser was a celebration of the library’s 70th anniversary and a milestone anniversary for the foundation itself. Sharon Bulova, chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, read a county resolution thanking the foundation for its library support over the past fifteen years.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank the foundation for its 15 years of enhancing library services and for sponsoring such an elegant fundraiser in celebration of the library’s 70th anniversary,” said Susan C. Thorniley, Chair of the Fairfax County Public Library Board of Trustees. “The enthusiastic support of everyone who helped make this event such a success demonstrates how much the community values its public library.”
“This successful event could not have been possible without the generous support of The Vietnamese American Community; ExxonMobil, Alan and Sally Merten, IMC and the hundreds of other library lovers who attended the event, helped sponsor it or made donations to the auctions,” said Alvah T. Beander, Chair, Fairfax Library Foundation Board of Directors. “I would especially like to thank the event co-chairs Sally Merten and Sushma Shenoy-Saluja.”
