Friends of Herndon Fortnightly Library

We Wish We Could but We Can't

Fairfax County Public Library branches cannot accept donations for the duration of the current COVID-19 health crisis. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Herndon Fortnightly Library

The Friends of the Herndon Fortnightly Library is a small but very active group that donates many hours of service and time to help the library and its community. Besides maintaining the library's ongoing book sale, the Friends often volunteer in the Circulation Department on a regular basis. It is a generous group and provides financial assistance to the branch whenever needed, from sponsoring children's and community programs to purchasing extra items for the library. The Friends of the Herndon Fortnightly Library are always looking for new members interested in special projects to assist the library

Mission Statement

The purpose of this organization will be to promote interest in the Library; to encourage the public's use of this Library and its resources; to receive and encourage gifts and donations to this Library; to arrange library programs and projects of general interest to the community; to support this Library in areas which lack sufficient funding from normal appropriations; and to cooperate as appropriate with other libraries and library volunteer associates to promote the interests of libraries in general.

Accomplishments

The Friends of the Herndon Fortnightly Library provide not only volunteer hours working in the Circulation Department, but also financial assistance to the branch, the community and the system.

Notably, the Friends have donated funds for many of the programs offered in the Summer Reading Program - from puppet shows to animal exhibits. As a supporter of the children's department, the Friends have purchased puppets for programs as well as posters, stickers, book marks and arts and crafts supplies.

The Friends also help the branch purchase items that are not always available from regular funds - notably a digital camera and a scanner. The Herndon Fortnightly Library cosponsors many community activities and the Friends offer assistance in many ways, from printing up their workbooks to helping with advertising and mailings. The Friends have also paid for the Library's display case and honorariums for a poetry festival.

Membership

Membership in this organization is open to all individuals and community organizations which support this association's goals as stated in the mission statement.

Meeting Dates

The annual meeting of the organization is held in March or April of each year at the Herndon Fortnightly Library. The Friends of the Herndon Fortnightly Library organize the library's ongoing book sale.

Donation Process

The Friends of the Herndon Fortnightly Library gladly accept donations of recent and popular books and magazines in good condition. We regret that we are unable to accept the following materials: textbooks; VHS tapes; soiled or damaged materials; items with missing parts; technical, professional or legal magazines or journals; or magazines, medical or finance items more than 3 years old.

We will add some donations to the collections; items we do not add are given to the ongoing Book Sale, or are disposed of in other ways. Proceeds from the Book Sale benefit the library.

A receipt can be given for donated materials. The library cannot assess any value on donated materials and will not provide a receipt for soiled or damaged materials. The library cannot pick up donations.
