“If we aren’t doing anything for these kids, then coming to the barbershop and talking is a waste of time.”
These words from Juan Yates, owner of True Reflections Barbershop, reflected his sincere desire to turn Fairfax County’s “Real Talk” programs into actual action. That is why he, along with other community partners and county agencies, banded together to create the Community Impact Coalition.
In taking the Real Talk program to the next level, the Community Impact Coalition aims to change young lives from the inside-out through creating spaces where kids and teens can interact with community members, learn life skills, and get real information they need to live healthy and productive lives.
The inaugural event occurred Friday, April 7, at the Hybla Valley Community Center, where the Coalition hosted its first Teen Summit.
Dozens of teens enjoyed Chick Fil-a sandwiches and game trucks (compliments of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.). Prior to the fun and games, however, the teens listened to information about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers from Franconia District Supervisor Rodney L. Lusk, job training and summer job opportunities from Virginia Career Works, and skills for maintaining mental health and wellness from The Growth & Healing Hub. Attendees participated in a demonstration about what happens during a law enforcement stop, and heard about a local mother’s tragic loss of her child to a fentanyl overdose.
They picked up grooming tips and ‘common sense life advice’ from the team of True Reflections Barber Shop. The Health Department led a fitness workout, and the day ended with a pickup basketball game with Fairfax County Police officers.
The Community Impact Coalition includes Fairfax County agencies Neighborhood and Community Services, the Health Department, Community Services Board, and Police. Community organizations Stronger2, Emmanuel Worship Center, True Reflections Barbershop, Virginia Career Works, The Growth and Healing Hub, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. volunteered time and resources to positively impact young lives along the Route 1 corridor during the April 7 event.
