Frying Pan Farm Park, Friends Celebrate New Bird Enclosure

Ribbon CuttingThe Fairfax County Park Authority, Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn, and the Friends of Frying Pan Farm Park joined to celebrate the official opening of a newly completed bird enclosure to house the farm’s ducks, turkeys and peafowl.

The project, fully funded through the generous contributions of the Friends of Frying Pan Farm Park, included the demolition of the old structure, regrading of the site, laying a new foundation, the installation of new sheds, pond, drainage system, lighting and enclosure fencing and restorative work to the neighboring pasture. The total project cost was estimated at $9,000.

“This project is a powerful reminder of the power of partnerships when it comes to being able to maintain and improve one of the largest, most diverse, and highly regarded park systems in the nation,” said Park Authority Executive Director Jai Cole. “It may not seem like much, but this enclosure not only allows our park guests to get up close and personal with the animals, it also improves the overall safety and living accommodations for the birds themselves – not to mention the improved drainage and restoration of the pasture in the process. We are grateful for the continued involvement and investment of our Friends of Frying Pan Farm Park that helps us continue to provide a fun and unique experience here on the farm.”

Since 1961, Frying Pan Farm Park has been a jewel of Fairfax County’s park system, with sights, sounds, animals and activities that connect our 21st century community with the area’s cultural and agricultural heritage. Frying Pan Farm Park is the oldest working farm in Fairfax County.
