Park Authority Celebrates Opening of New Park in Falls Church

Hogge ParkThe Fairfax County Park Authority, joined by Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross and members of the community commemorated the opening of the Boyd A. and Charlotte M. Hogge Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, May 6.

The 6.1-acre site was purchased by the Park Authority from Charlotte M. Hogge in 2006. In 2010, the Park Authority initiated a master planning process, which involved extensive community input, to define the future vision for the site.

During the process, the community expressed a strong desire to maintain the open character of the site without formal athletic fields; a strong interest in community gardens; and support for less-intensive recreational facilities. During a beautiful afternoon, residents of all ages and abilities celebrated and enjoyed the completion of the envisioned park, which thoughtfully incorporates these neighborhood priorities. The park includes a picnic pavilion, open play area, playground, pickleball and basketball courts, accessible community gardens with raised beds, and trails. The total project cost was $2 million and was funded by voter-approved park bonds.

“I can think of no better occasion that more purely demonstrates what the Park Authority is all about – place-making,” said Ron Kendall, Mason District’s representative on the Fairfax County Park Authority Board. “We create places where individuals can take a break from the demands of ever-increasingly stressful lives, where families can have enriching experiences playing and spending time together, and where communities can gather and strengthen the neighborly bonds of fellowship and goodwill. In that light, Hogge Park is another gem in the Mason District.”

Boyd A. and Charlotte M. Hogge Park is located at 3139 Glen Carlyn Road, in Falls Church. Photos from the event may be viewed at the Hogge Park dedication Flickr page. For more information, please contact the Public Information Office at Parkmail@fairfaxcounty.gov.
