Hours: 

  • Opening and midday shift times vary between 6am to 4pm.
  • Weekday evenings shift times vary between 4pm to 9:30pm.
  • Weekend shift times vary between 7:30am to 7pm.

Salary: 

  • Weekday opening and midday positions start at $15.00 per hour.
  • Weekday evenings and weekend positions rage from $12.00 to $15.00 per hour.

Duties Include:

  • Prevents accidents and drownings and performs rescue and emergency care as needed.  Ensures the health and safety of individuals in the pool/spa, locker rooms, and surrounding areas through enforcement of park policies, pool/spa rules, and local health department regulations, as well as application of safety standards and pool surveillance (10/20 rule).
  • Performs daily cleaning and maintenance duties relating to the pool/spa, locker rooms, and surrounding areas as well as equipment associated with these areas.
  • Provides excellent customer service.  Assists patrons daily with lost and found, locker problems, phone calls, questions, etc., daily.
  • Administers First Aid to public and staff as needed.
  • Maintains water and rescue skills at “test ready” levels through required in-service training and attendance at monthly staff meetings.
  • Participates in set-up, breakdown, and cleaning associated with special events and rentals held in the pool area.
  • Completes other duties and tasks assigned by Head Guard, supervisor, or Duty Manager, as well as assists Park staff with other site operations and events.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be at least 15 years of age to apply.
  • Applicants are required to pass a lifeguard certification course, which is provided at no cost.
  • Course prerequisites include:
    • Swim 100 yards continuously using a front crawl or breaststroke.
    • Retrieve a 10-pound dive brick from the deepest part of the facility’s pool.
    • Tread water without hands for one minute.

Necessary Special Requirements: 

  • The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.  

Note: We are hiring to fill seasonal and part-time benefits eligible positions.

  • Seasonal positions may not exceed 900 hours per calendar year. Individuals in these positions are not eligible for benefits and are not eligible to earn leave or receive holiday pay. 
  • Part-time benefits eligible positions are scheduled to work a minimum 1,040 hours and no more than a maximum of 1,560 hours in a calendar year. This position is eligible to receive limited benefits, including Medical, Vision, and Dental Insurance Coverage, Flexible Spending Program, and Deferred Compensation.

Position Title: Swim Instructor
Salary Range: Starts at $22.73 per hour (increases based upon experience and certifications).
 
Overview: The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) provides quality facilities and services which offers residents opportunities for recreation to improvement their physical and mental well-being, and enhancement of their quality of life. Swim Instructors provide a special service to our customers, providing students of all ages and skill level various skill sets and competencies. We offer programs for parents and children as well as the dependent beginner to the advanced independent fitness swimmer. Orientation to our program is required; shadowing a tenured instructor is also required prior to teaching our programs.
 
As a swim instructor, you are responsible for, but not limited to the following:
  • Be dependable, enthusiastic and have a great attitude;
  • Assure safety of all participants at all times;
  • Prepare class routines for assigned classes;
  • Instruct classes for a variety of age groups and swimming level competencies;
  • Attend training opportunities and workshops;
  • Provide appropriate and professional feedback to students/parents on progress;
  • Maintain class area and equipment, cleaning up after class;
  • Conduct program in accordance with the approved class curriculum;
  • Complete administrative tasks
  • Provide outstanding customer service to all customers/class members;
  • Planning, implementing and delivering effective and qualitative programs for customers of all ages and ability;
  • Answer general questions about both registration and class placement;
  • Communicate to the Aquatics Director in advance of any classes you will miss and finding a pre-approved sub
Skills: 
  • Demonstrate a passion for swimming and teaching;
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with a variety of ability, personality and fitness levels;
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible to teaching space/environment and different learning styles;
  • Ability to receive constructive criticism and feedback from customers as well as supervisor;
  • Flexible with an ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
 
Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Must be a certified swim instructor through an accredited agency and/or be certified in the specialty you plan on teaching OR demonstrated extensive swim teaching experience;
  • Must be able to work weekends;
  • Must be 16 years old
