Yard Erosion - Solving Erosion Problems

Yard erosion occurs when water picks up and carries soil from a portion of your property. Yard erosion can be localized or widespread. It can be slight as in sheet erosion or it can be severe as in gully erosion.

Why Is My Yard Eroding?

Yard erosion commonly occurs:

  • On bare spots (poorly vegetated or exposed soils)
  • Around downspouts, sump pump drains, or other points of discharge
  • Along paths of heavy stormwater runoff or on slopes

Choose One: Where do you see evidence of erosion?

Erosion causing bare spots or gullies in the yard.1. In the yard, forming bare spots or gullies »

  • Protect eroded land: replant, cover with mulch or gravel, build check dams or terraces. Learn how.
  • Redirect or capture runoff

Erosion located near outside walls.2. Along the gutter drip line, at the end of downspouts or near outside walls »

  • Protect the pipe outlet with a splashguard or stone
  • Reroute the discharge point using downspout extensions
  • Inspect and maintain gutters
  • Protect the drip line with gravel or vegetation

Sediment washing into driveways or walkways.3. As sediment deposited on sidewalks, driveways or flat areas »

  • Find the source of sediment, protect the eroding area
  • Redirect or capture runoff
