Three Student Opportunities from NVSWCD
(Conservation Currents, Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District, Summer 2007)
Each March, the district nominates a senior for the Virginia Association of Soil & Water Conservation District Educational Foundation scholarship. This year, our nominee Chantilly High School senior Brian Stebner earned the $1,000 scholarship, which he will use to attend Old Dominion University this fall.
Youth Conservation Camp
Two applicants per year can win partial scholarships to attend Youth Conservation Camp. This fun, week-long camp sponsored by VASWCD is held each July at Blackburg’s Virginia Tech campus. Students interested in natural science or the environment benefit from meeting students from around Virginia, experiencing dorm life, and participating in aquatic ecology, soils, agriculture, wildlife and forestry activities and field trips.
Regional Science & Engineering Fair
NVSWCD participates as an organizational judge in this annual Fairfax County Public Schools event. Student awards range from $25-100 and include the opportunity to present at a district board meeting. This year, Carl Stankwitz, a sophomore at Centreville High School received first place from the district for his project “Streams and Shrubberies: A Saga of Soggy Science.”
VASWCD Scholarship and camp applications are available from the district in February each year (call 703-324-1460, TTY 711). The district maintains a list of winning science projects on its website.
