The Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) fully certifies the Sheriff's Office in the operation of the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. To maintain that certification, the Sheriff's Office is subject to random, unannounced inspections by the DOC about once a year. The most recent DOC inspection took place in March 2017. The Sheriff's Office must be in 100 percent compliance with 43 life, health and safety standards, such as Supervision of Inmates, Food Service Program, Key and Door Control, and Staff Training.

The Sheriff's Office is also accredited by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, the American Correctional Association and the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission.
