Virtual Fairfax is an interactive 3-D mapping, analysis, and exploration application for Fairfax County, Virginia. It allow users search for addresses, schools, parks, and other county locations, and then easily link to other Fairfax County data. Users may also explore thousands of very realistic 3-D buildings, terrain and the latest aerial imagery. Sophisticated analysis tools include: line of sight, slope, shadow analysis, and terrain profiles. For further information, please see the list of features below.


You must download and install the TerraExplorer Plugin

A downloadable plugin named TerraExplorer 6.6.1 (Windows OS only) is required to use the Virtual Fairfax application. Information about the system requirements and installation process for the plugin may be found below. Please click the “Download the plugin” button below to begin the download and install process. After TerraExplorer 6.6.1 is installed, please click the “Launch Virtual Fairfax” button to enter Virtual Fairfax.

What is Virtual Fairfax and What Can it Do?

Virtual Fairfax is an interactive 3-D mapping, analysis, and exploration application for Fairfax County, Virginia. It allow users search for addresses, schools, parks, and other county locations, and then easily link to other Fairfax County data. Users may also explore thousands of very realistic 3-D buildings, terrain and the latest aerial imagery. Sophisticated analysis tools include: line of sight, slope, shadow analysis, and terrain profiles.

This powerful new application allows you to discover Fairfax County through several advanced functions:

  • Interactively explore the county in three-dimensions and six-degrees of motion
  • See hundreds of very realistic 3-D buildings in several commercial corridors
  • Take dynamic tours of the county (historic sites or commercial areas)
  • View terrain and the latest aerial imagery
  • Search for addresses, schools, parks, and other county locations
  • Easily link to other Fairfax County data like detailed neighborhood reports in My Neighborhood, Tax Administration assessment information from the real estate tax assessment information site, the Police Events Viewer, and land development information in LDSNet and the Land Development Information History system
  • Analyze the terrain with several tools like slope analysis, shadow analysis, terrain profiles, and line of sight analysis
  • Add your own building models (KML format) to the Fairfax County landscape
  • Turn map layers on and off such as parcel boundaries, streets, and historic sites
  • Draw shapes and add text to the map
  • Make presentations or your own fly-through tours in the 3-D world
  • Export map scenes and create web links to places in the map


What's New

New Mount Vernon Supervisor District Application Available

Using the same technology as Virtual Fairfax, the new Virtual Fairfax – Mount Vernon District link allows users to focus their exploration of the Mount Vernon district. A long list of locations and images of current and proposed developments are provided. There is also a comprehensive guided tour from north to south which highlights important issues and developments in Mount Vernon district. All of the same tools available in Virtual Fairfax are also included in this application.

New plugin being supported

Virtual Fairfax has been significantly upgraded to support new enhancements to 3-D building and terrain rendering as well to support a wide-range of sophisticated analytical tools.   To take advantage of the improvements, users must upgrade their TerraExplorer Viewer plugin to version 6.6.1.

System Requirements

A downloadable plugin (TerraExplorer 6.6.1) is required to use the Virtual Fairfax application. TerraExplorer 6.6.1 is a sophisticated 3-D GIS desktop viewer produced by Skyline Software Systems Inc and is only available on Windows operating systems. Full system requirements are detailed below. It is understood that the Windows OS and hardware requirements makes it difficult for some, however Virtual Fairfax will expand to more platforms once the technology allows it.

Previous users of Virtual Fairfax that had used versions of the plugin lower than 6.6.1 need to upgrade the TerraExplorer 6.6.1. Please follow the instructions in the Installation Guide for uninstalling previous versions before downloading and installing 6.6.1. Once installed, please click the launch button to enter Virtual Fairfax.

  • Operating System: Windows® XP / Vista / 7/ 8/ 10. 64 bit is strongly recommended. Unfortunately, MacOS is not currently supported.
  • System Memory: 1GB of RAM (4 GB or more recommended).
  • Video Card: 256MB of video memory (1024 MB or more recommended). Pixel and vertex shader v3.0 and vertex shader v3.0 is required for the display of dynamic water effects, animated cloud map, and sky texture.
  • Processor: Pentium Dual-Core or equivalent.
  • Internet Connection: Broadband connection.
  • Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 or higher. Other browsers will work with a slightly different experience.
