Deadlines

Monday, May 12
Final day to register to vote. If you are registered at your current address, you do not need to register again. Citizens needing to verify their voter registration status are encouraged to call the General Registrar’s office at (703) 222-0776 as early as possible prior to the May 12 voter registration deadline.

All qualified voters in Fairfax County are eligible to vote in the June 10th Primary Elections. The Democratic primary is being held in the 8th, 10th, and 11th congressional districts. The Republican primary is being held in the 8th and 10th congressional districts only. Voters may choose to participate in either the Republican Primary or the Democratic Primary, but may NOT participate in both.

Tuesday, June 3
Final day to apply for an absentee ballot by mail.

Saturday, June 7*
Final day to vote absentee in person.

*Please note: The annual Fairfax County festival, Celebrate Fairfax, is being held at the Fairfax County Government Center the weekend of June 6-8. On Saturday, June 7, absentee voters may experience traffic congestion or delays near the Government Center. Absentee voters who wish to vote on June 7 but who do not want to attend the festival should go to the “Yellow Gate” (south entrance) where they will be given priority parking and assistance. This year, the Electoral Board added a second Saturday, May 31, for absentee voting so that voters would have an alternative to the Saturday that falls on the festival weekend.

Absentee Voting

If you will be away from Fairfax County on Election Day or are unable to go to the polls because of illness or disability, you may vote by absentee ballot by mail or in-person.

In-person absentee voting will be conducted only at the Fairfax County Office of Elections, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Suite 323, Fairfax, VA 22035. In-person absentee voting begins Monday, May 12, and ends Saturday, June 7. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 31, and June 7, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Voter ID Requirement

Virginia voters are reminded that legislation adopted by the 2000 Virginia General Assembly requires them to provide identification (ID) at the polls (or to sign an Affirmation of Identity) in order to vote.

Acceptable forms of identification include the following:

  • Virginia Voter Information Card
  • Virginia driver's license or special identification card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles
  • Valid United States passport
  • Military ID card
  • Any Federal, state or local government-issued ID card
  • Employer-issued photo ID card
  • Social Security card

A voter who fails to bring acceptable ID to the polls may still vote after signing, under oath, an Affirmation of Identity, which is the voter's certification in writing that the name and address information provided to the election officials at the polling place is correct.

Please report change of name or address.

To remain a qualified registered voter, the law requires you to notify your local voter registration office of any change in your name or address. This must be done before the registration books close for the next election. The deadline is 29 days prior to any general or primary election and 13 days before a special election.

You can submit your notice of change of name and/or address either by mail (12000 Government Center Parkway, Suite 323, Fairfax, Virginia 22035-0081) or by fax (703-324-2205). In either case, the notice must include your signature to be valid. Notice cannot be made by telephone or by e-mail.

After your change is processed, you will be mailed a new Voter Information Card. If a new card does not arrive within a few weeks, please call us at 703-222-0776 to confirm that your notice was received.
