Van Dorn St. Pedestrian Bridge Replacement Begins Aug. 24

A rusted steel pedestrian bridge located adjacent to Van Dorn Street, where it passes under I-495 in Alexandria, is scheduled for replacement beginning Aug. 24. Construction should take about two weeks.

During construction, the section of trail that connects each end of the bridge will be closed. If you walk or cycle, then shuttle service will be provided from Oakwood Road to Vine Street every 15 minutes 24 hours a day.

Also during construction, one of the northbound lanes on Van Dorn Street will be closed during these hours:

  • Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning
  • Friday 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Sunday 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The new bridge, made of fiberglass, will consist of four spans and LED lights. The total cost of this project is approximately $350,000.
