It’s time to start thinking about filing our federal and state taxes. But there is some good news, we can make your life a little easier with free county resources to help you get through the tax season.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA): If you worked in 2017, and earned less than $54,000, then you may qualify for this free service provided by community volunteers who are designated by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as certified tax preparers. They will ensure that you receive the maximum tax refund and help determine if you are eligible for tax credits. You will need to bring photo ID and other documents.
Families throughout Northern Virginia received over $10.7 million in federal refunds last tax season through this free service.
Income Assistance for Older Adults: Our county Library branches also host the AARP Foundation Tax Aide Program, which provides free help in preparing and filing state and federal income tax returns. Offered in cooperation with the IRS, the Tax Aide Program provides free tax assistance services for low- and middle-income taxpayers, with special attention given to those age 50 and over.
State Tax Filing Assistance: The county’s Department of Tax Administration offers general assistance in completing Virginia state income tax returns.
