Systems
The Information Technology (IT) Section is responsible for the technical support of over 700 computers and 22 servers located at 42 remote locations. The section is also responsible for management of Fire and Rescue Department's Local Area Network (LAN) and integration with the Fairfax County systems via Wide Area Network (WAN).
Each fire station is equipped with personal computers, connecting the station to the Fire and Rescue Department's IT systems, the county's corporate and mainframe systems, as well as the Internet. A separate network connects all the stations and selected administrative sites to the Department of Public Safety Communications
Under the supervision of an IT Program Manager I, the IT Section provides many services to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue (FRD) staff and services to the citizens and businesses of Fairfax County:
Client/Server Services
- Supervises User Accounts and Information Protection on local servers
- Supervises all desktop Technical Support and Projects
- File/Printer
Intranet Services
- Provides Internal Information
- Oversees conversion of Databases
Fire Station Services
- Provides on-site Technical Support at over 42 remote sites
- Manages Projects to include PC replacements, upgrades and inventory
Desktop Management Services
- Provides Acquisition and Technical Review of computer systems
- Manages Hardware upgrades, replacements, and software licenses
- Provides Inventory Control
- Coordinates Data Communication installations
Data Communications Services
- Manages Incident Reporting System
- Provides Department Data Requests
- Manages Data/Information protection
- Maintains FRD Internet and Intranet pages
- Manages Geographic Information Systems
Mobile Command Vehicles
- Manages a fleet of five mobile units each with a special function
- Each mobile unit has an on board computer network with a server, multiple laptops, printers, and wireless Internet access
