Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a townhouse fire Thursday, September 6, 2007, at approximately 4 p.m., in the Chantilly area of Fairfax County. The townhouse is located at 4689 Deerwatch Drive.
Firefighters encountered smoke and fire coming from the rear and sides of the middle townhouse upon arrival. Fire extended from the rear deck up the exterior and entered the second floor kitchen of the three-story townhouse. Two adjacent townhouses received minor damage from fire exposure. The fire was quickly brought under control upon the arrival of firefighters. There were no injuries. Two adults and two children have been displaced. Red Cross is assisting the family.
Damage is estimated at $150,000.
According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. Improper disposal of smoking materials into a plastic flower container on the deck caused the fire.
