Three-Alarm Falls Church Apartment Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to an apartment fire at approximately 7:50 a.m., January 12, 2008, in the Falls Church area of Fairfax County. The twelve-story high-rise, Cavalier Club Apartments, is located at 6200 Wilson Boulevard.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire in apartment 211 upon arrival. Subsequently, second and third alarms were requested bringing over 90 emergency personnel to the scene to fight the fire and to safely evacuate several hundred residents from the 220 unit building. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes. There was also a small explosion confined to a room inside the apartment where the fire originated.

Fairfax County Police were called to investigate a suicide threat. Officers attempted to extinguish the fire using several portable fire extinguishers and rescued two adult males from the fire. One adult male was transported to Washington Burn Center with life-threatening injuries. Two adult males and one police officer were transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Two police officers were treated at the scene.

Four adult males have been displaced from unit 211. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

Damage is estimated at $51,700. There was also minor damage to the apartment above.

According to fire investigators, the fire was intentionally set.
