Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department
News Release 10-02
Date: January 4, 2010
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a commercial building fire Friday, January 1, 2010, at approximately 7:05 a.m., in the Annandale area of Fairfax County. The commercial stand-alone building houses The Framing Factory, and the office of Kruger's Antiques and is located at 7130 Little River Turnpike.
Firefighters encountered fire showing from the front door of the one-story brick building upon arrival. The Incident Commander struck a second alarm, bringing over 60 firefighters, including Alexandria Fire Department units, to the scene. Crews quickly initiated an interior fire attack but were forced to pull back because of the intense fire and the deteriorating fire conditions inside. Firefighters also fought the fire from the rear of the building; however, fire conditions and a potential roof collapse prevented them from entering the structure. The Incident Commander then called for an exterior fire attack using heavy water streams from ladder trucks to suppress the fire and protect nearby buildings. Firefighters were able to contain the damage to the one structure despite high winds and adverse weather conditions. Firefighters operated at the scene for approximately ten hours. There were no injuries.
Damage is estimated at approximately $1.340 million. The building is a total loss.
According to fire investigators, the fire is under investigation.
