Accidental Annandale Townhouse Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a townhouse fire, Thursday, December 1, 2011, at approximately 4:15 p.m., in the Annandale area of Fairfax County. The townhome is located at 3356 Wheatwheel Lane.
Firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from the rear of a middle townhouse unit upon arrival. Firefighters quickly gained access to the basement and conducted an aggressive interior fire attack, bringing the fire under control in approximately 10 minutes. The fire was contained to the basement area, with residual smoke damage to other parts of the townhouse. There was no damage to adjacent townhomes. Six adults and two children have been displaced. Red Cross is assisting the displaced occupants. There were no injuries.
Damage is estimated at $50,000.
According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. Incense burning in a basement closet too close to combustibles caused the fire.
Combustible Materials Safety Tips
- Keep at least three feet of clearance between any device that creates heat and could ignite combustible materials.
- Do not store combustible materials in closed areas or near a heat source.
