Accidental West Annandale House Fire

Date: July 5, 2012
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire, Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at approximately 1 p.m. in the West Annandale area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located at 8458 Ararat Court.
Firefighters reported heavy smoke coming from the eaves of the two-story home upon arrival. Firefighters found fire in the attic and extinguished the fire in approximately 10 minutes. Smoke alarms activated, however, no one was home when the fire broke out. The power at the home had been out for several days. A total of five occupants have been displaced, two adults, and three children. Red Cross is assisting the family. There were no injuries.
Damage is estimated at $85,000.
According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. When the power returned to the home, the electric stove was in the on position and combustible materials near the stove ignited causing the fire.

- Keep at least three feet of clearance between your alternate heating source and anything combustible.
- Do not store combustible materials in closed areas or near a heat source.
