For approximately six months, 24 recruit firefighters have been undergoing training to respond to fires, hazardous materials incidents, vehicle crashes and extrications, swift water rescue, confined space rescue, and emergency medical incidents. These firefighter/EMT recruits will officially become professional firefighters in Fairfax County upon graduation.
Dr. Denis Onieal, Superintendent, National Fire Academy (NFA), will be the graduation keynote speaker. Appointed in 1995, he has expanded the National Fire Academy's outreach program to work more closely with state and local training agencies and to increase NFA training from 15,000 to more than 110,000. The NFA curriculum has been revised to include college credit recommendation and continuing education units for all resident and off-campus deliveries. Under his leadership, and in cooperation with over 100 colleges and universities, the NFA has standardized the associate and bachelor degree programs across the country.
Dr. Onieal has a bachelor's degree from New Jersey City University, a master's degree in public administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and a doctorate in education from New York University. He was also a member of the Jersey City Fire Department from 1971 to 1995, and rose to the rank of Deputy Chief, and then was appointed acting chief, leading 620 firefighters and officers. On September 12, 2001, he led the US Fire Administration's team at the World Trade Center, working behind the scenes to help the New York City Fire Department re-establish their systems of command, control, and on-site communications.
