Fire Chief Selects Richard A. Roatch for Deputy Chief

Fire Chief Richard Bowers has selected Battalion Chief Richard A. Roatch for promotion to deputy chief, effective September 21, 2013. Chief Roatch will be assigned as Deputy Chief, C-Shift Operations Bureau. Since July 2010, he has served as a field battalion chief.
Chief Roatch began his career as a recruit firefighter in April 1990, and was initially assigned to Fire and Rescue Station 1, McLean. Career assignments and promotions include:
- Hazardous Material Technician, 1992, Fire and Rescue Station 1, McLean
- Lieutenant, 1995, Fire and Rescue Station 1, McLean
- Captain I, 2000, Fire and Rescue Station 12, Great Falls
- Captain II, 2005, Apparatus Section, Support Services Division
- Battalion Chief, 2006, Emergency Preparedness, Special Operations Division
As Deputy Chief, C-Shift, he will be one of three operational shift deputies, supervising the daily activities of more than 350 personnel in 37 fire and rescue stations throughout Fairfax County.
Chief Roatch is a member of Virginia Task Force One, Fairfax County's Urban Search and Rescue Team and has deployed to Haiti, Japan, and responded to Hurricanes Katrina, Irene, and Sandy.
He is a member of FEMA's, Urban Search and Rescue Incident Support Team and a member of the National Capital Region Incident Management Team. He is also a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters and the Fairfax County Professional Officers Association.
Chief Roatch and his wife Cindy reside in Manassas, Virginia.
