Fire Chief Michael Neuhard will recognize Fire and Rescue Explorer
Post 1949 by presenting the Department's patch, at a ceremony,
April 18, 2005, at 6 pm., at the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue
Academy, 4600 West Ox Road, Fairfax, VA 22030. The patch presentation
officially announces the Explorer Post being sponsored by the
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.
Fire and Rescue Explorer Post 1949 was chartered in January
2005, and is affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America. This
worksite-based program helps teens and adults students between
the ages of 14 to 20 gain insight into a variety of career opportunities
within the fire and rescue career field through hands-on training
and activities.
The program encourages positive social interaction, promotes
physical and mental fitness, and helps students develop leadership
skills. It also gives students an opportunity to learn more
about firefighting as well as boosting their self-esteem through
success at school and work.
Explorers meet twice a month and gain experiences similar to
those of actual firefighters. Explorers will learn the basics
of fire suppression, emergency medical services, fire safety
and prevention, public education, and participate in a "ride-along"
program where they can put their skills to work in real-life
emergencies.
