Since February 7, 2005, 23 recruit firefighters/emergency medical technicians from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department have been training to handle hazardous materials incidents, high-rise and emergency vehicle extrication operations, swift water and confined rescue, fire suppression, and other emergency medical incidents. The 20 week recruit firefighting/EMT course is strenuous, both physically and mentally.
The firefighter recruits will officially become professional firefighter/EMT’s at graduation, Friday, June 24, 2005, 7 p.m., at the Fairfax County Governmental Center, 12000 Govt Ctr Pkwy, Fairfax Virginia, 22035, in the Supervisors Board Auditorium.
Fire Chief Debra R. Pryor, Berkeley Fire Department, California, will be the graduation speaker. In December 2004, Debra Pryor became the Berkeley Fire Department’s first woman Fire Chief. In 1985 she became the first woman firefighter hired by the Berkeley Fire Department. Early career promotions included: Apparatus Operator, Lieutenant, Assistant Fire Marshal, Fire Captain, Department Training Officer, Assistant Fire Chief, and in 1998 was sworn in as Deputy Fire Chief.
Chief Pryor is one of three women Fire Chiefs in California, the second African American Fire Chief in the country, and one of just 21 women Fire Chiefs nationally.
She has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, and has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from California State University at Hayward.
Chief Pryor has served as President of the Alameda County Training Officers Association, and is currently active in the Northern California Chapter of Intergovernmental Management Training Programs.
