118th Recruit Firefighter Graduation

Since April, 2006, 24 recruit firefighters from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department have been training to respond to hazardous materials incidents, emergency vehicle extrications, swift water rescue, confined rescue, fire suppression, and emergency medical incidents. The 20-week recruit firefighter/EMT course is strenuous, both physically and mentally.

Firefighter recruits will officially become professional firefighter/EMT’s upon graduation.

Chief Dennis L. Rubin, Fire Chief, City of Atlanta, Georgia, will be the graduation speaker. Chief Rubin is a 34-year veteran of the fire and rescue service, and began his career as a firefighter, company officer and command level officer in several major fire departments including Washington, D.C., and Norfolk, Virginia. In 1994, he served as the President of the State Fire Chiefs Association of Virginia. He serves on several committees with the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

Chief Rubin has written over 140 technical articles that have been published in national fire-rescue journals. These magazine articles relate to fire department operations, administration, training, and safety. Chief Rubin is a long-standing contributing editor of FIREHOUSE Magazine. Chief Rubin has completed his first full-length book entitled Rubes Rules for Survival that is available through PennWell Publishing. He was the recipient of the 1998 Dothan Alabama Chamber of Commerce Leader of the Year Award
