Virginia Task Force 1, (VATF-1) Fairfax County’s urban search and rescue team, has received an activation order from the federal government for deployment to Jacksonville, Florida, as a preparedness contingency for Hurricane Ernesto.

The thirty-four person, Type III Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR) is scheduled to assemble at the Fire and Rescue Academy, located at 4600 West Ox Road by 5 p.m., to depart at approximately 8 p.m. The team, a cache of rescue equipment, and response vehicles will travel by ground to a designated staging area in Jacksonville, Florida.

The VATF-1 is being deployed in a Type III configuration, Type III concept was developed to meet a need to provide a smaller, light search and rescue capability. This “modular” response concept was designed for events involving damage to lightweight wood structures including homes and strip malls, typically consistent with weather related incidents. Team composition includes a task force leader, specialists in the fields of search, rescue, canine, communications, logistics, planning, safety, and structural engineering, as well as medical and hazardous materials specialists.
