The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department has partnered with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) to sponsor several marrow donor drives throughout Fairfax County during February.

The program goal is to encourage residents to enroll in the national registry and increase the overall numbers of nationalities with lower representation. A quick and easy swab inside the cheek is all it takes to join the registry.

Each year, more than 35,000 children and adults in the United States are diagnosed with diseases like leukemia which a marrow or blood cell transplant may be a treatment option. Only 30 percent will find a matched donor in their own family.

Numerous opportunities for residents to register with the National Marrow Donor Program have been scheduled.
