Fairfax County firefighters and paramedics, and Local 2068, International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), will kick-off the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), "Fill the Boot" campaign, Wednesday, August 27, 2008, 11:30 a.m., at Fairfax Center Fire and Rescue Station 40.

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerry Connolly, Supervisor Catherine Hudgins, Dranesville District; Brennan Hebdon, 2008 Virginia MDA Goodwill Ambassador; John Niemic, President, Local 2068; Fire Chief Ronald Mastin, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department; and Jamie Lareau, Director, Greater Washington MDA District, will attend the kick-off.

Firefighters will be collecting in high traffic areas and intersections throughout Fairfax County over Labor Day weekend, beginning Thursday, August 28, 2008, through Monday, September 1, 2008, for "Jerry's Kids."  Last year, firefighters collected over $536,000 from residents and visitors throughout the area.  The Department was the highest collecting fire service organization in the United States last year.

Proceeds raised will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA's outpatient clinics for people with neuromuscular diseases at Children's National Medical Center and Georgetown University.  The IAFF is an unwavering supporter of MDA, donating over $300 million during its 54-year partnership.
