Chief Ronald Mastin, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, Chief James Schwartz, Arlington County Fire Department, and Chair, Council of Governments Fire Chiefs Committee, and other regional fire chiefs will kick-off Fire Prevention Week at 10 a.m., Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at North Point Fire and Rescue Station 39, 1117 Reston Avenue, Herndon, Virginia. Firefighters will provide an interactive demonstration involving local elementary school students. The children will create a home escape plan, demonstrate what to do when a smoke alarm sounds, and how to call 911.
The theme for Fire Prevention Week is “Prevent Home Fires.” In an effort to battle home fires before they start, regional chief officers will speak about fire safety, including preventing fires and fire injuries, especially in the home.
Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres.
