A ribbon-cutting and grand opening of the Fire Alarm and Sprinkler System Training Laboratory (FASST) will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, October 31, 2008, at the William J. Burkholder Building, 10700 Page Avenue, Fairfax. Fire Chief Ronald L. Mastin and Deputy Chief Derek A. Baker, Fire Prevention and Office of the Fire Marshal, will participate in a traditional ribbon-cutting.
The Fire Alarm and Sprinkler System Training Laboratory was developed to provide firefighters and fire inspectors with hands-on training opportunities on various types of sprinkler systems used throughout Fairfax County and the region. The approximately 850 square foot modular space can accommodate 24 fire inspectors per class. The training offered includes: inspection and operation of fire protection detection systems, sprinkler systems, fire and heat alarms reporting systems, operational stand pipe systems, and simulated fire command center systems.
The training laboratory is a public-private partnership, completed at no cost to residents. It will serve firefighters from Northern Virginia fire and rescue departments and will partner with several fire protection businesses, Northern Virginia Community College, Virginia Fire Services Board, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The laboratory provides an invaluable resource to better help protect the lives and property of county residents.
Firefighters will provide tours and demonstrations of the Fire Alarm and Sprinkler System Training Laboratory immediately following the ribbon-cutting.
