ISO Ratings for Fairfax County, 1984 - 2008

  • ISO Public Protection Split Classification: 3/9 *
  • ISO Statistical Territorial Multiplier: .643

Insurance Services Office's (ISO) statistical evaluation for commercial properties has as one component the Territorial Multiplier, derived from Statistical Grading. This method analyzes loss cost for jurisdictions. In Virginia, only four areas are statistically graded: Norfolk, Richmond, Virginia Beach, and Fairfax County. In statistical grading, these four areas are rated against the “balance of the state” which is given the index value of 1.0. Less than 1.0 means relatively less loss cost, while greater than 1.0 means relatively greater loss cost.

* Note: In 1984, Fairfax County was graded, non-statistically, as 3/9 in the ISO Public Protection Classification system. This designation is frozen at 1984, and is not considered in current statistical grading.

ISO has supplied the following Territorial Multipliers for Fairfax County for the following years. Other information is included for comparison.

ISO ratings show a slight upward trend overall from 1998 to the present. Nevertheless, Fairfax County continues to enjoy a loss cost territorial multiplier which is about 64 percent of the balance of the state. The commercial buildings in Fairfax County continue to benefit from a relatively stable and relatively low loss cost multiplier. It should be noted that this relatively low cost territorial multiplier has been maintained over a period of 19 years, 1989 to the present.
