ABOUT RSS
The Fire Marshal uses the Internet by way of an RSS feed as one means to inform the community about newly issued publications such as Code Compliance Guidelines and Letters to Community & Industry, as well as general announcements and information pertaining to the mission of the Fire Marshal (content). RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, an easy way for you to keep up with important announcements and information from the Fire Marshal. RSS feeds help you avoid browsing or searching for information on individual websites. With RSS, the content you want from one or multiple websites can be delivered directly to you without cluttering your inbox with e-mail messages. This content is called a "feed."
What is Really Simple Syndication or RSS?
With all the websites, blogs, and other content on the Internet, how can you keep up-to-date with the latest information on areas of interest without constantly re-visiting your favorite websites? Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is the answer.
RSS provides for an aggregator (sometimes called an "RSS reader" or "notifier") to present the latest additions on a variety of websites all in one place. For example, if you would like entertainment, sports, and news items from three different sites and also to be kept current on the latest announcements and information from Fairfax County government including the Fire Marshal, simply provide the relevant URLs to the aggregator (RSS reader) and it will let you know when new items appear on those websites without having to re-visit the each site individually.
How do you know if an RSS is available?
Blogs, podcasts, and many other Web pages will often include an indication — usually a graphic — that the page has an RSS feed available. This RSS graphic looks like this or, if a podcast, like this 
. Some browsers will identify Web pages with RSS feeds automatically.
What do you need to have to get an RSS feed?
You need an RSS reader or aggregator. This software (often free) can bring together, or "aggregate," the feeds that you have chosen. These feeds may be from news, blogs, or a variety of other types of Web pages including the Fairfax County Fire Marshal website.
To verify if you have an RSS reader or to obtain RSS reader software, go to your search engine (i.e., Google, Bing, AOL, etc.), open it, and check to see if it is already available. If not, search for an RSS reader and follow the instructions to add it to your computer. It is within this software that you will paste the URL address of the RSS feed you would like.
How do you add a feed to your RSS reader?
The software you choose will provide its unique instructions but often it's just a matter of entering the appropriate URL (usually it will end in either .xml or .rss) into the RSS reader's or aggregator's Subscribe text box.
