Fire Marshal Permit Requirements

The Fire Marshal administers and issues two types of permits: Construction Permits and Fire Prevention Code Permits (FPCP).

CONSTRUCTION PERMITS

The Fire Marshal is authorized to act on behalf of the Fairfax County Building Official (DPWES) regarding enforcement of the USBC which includes processing and issuing construction permits (i.e., FPD Permit,  Low-voltage Electrical Permit, Mechanical/Gas Permit) related to fire protection equipment/systems and special locking arrangements.

Once issued, construction permits allow the permit applicant (i.e., licensed contractor) to install or modify systems and equipment for which a permit and/or approval is required under Section 108 of the Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC), applicable sections of the Fire Prevention Code, and the water and fire regulations section Fairfax County Public Facilities Manual (PFM). For a complete list of construction permit and plans review fees, consult the fire marshal billable services and fees section of our website.
