Advances in Our Understanding of Chronic Pain

In this presentation, Dr. Clauw will discuss advances in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain.  He will emphasize that some pain is not a problem in the area of the body someone is experiencing pain but instead comes from the brain and nervous system. This type of pain is called centralized pain and does not respond to drug (e.g. opioids) or non-drug (surgery) that often work well for pain that is due to a problem in that area of the body.  He will also discuss a number of self-management options, many of which are available on the homepage of the PainGuide-University of Michigan.
