Fairfax County Bicycle Locker Rental Program

What’s a bicycle locker?

A bicycle locker is simply a garage for your bike.  It provides a way to store your bicycle securely out of the elements of rain, sun and snow.  They are usually located at transit transfer centers such as park and ride facilities.

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation currently manages bicycle lockers at two county park and ride locations:

Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride Lot
12530 Sunrise Valley Drive
Herndon, Virginia
Ten lockers are located at the east end of the bus platform

Reston East Park and Ride Lot
1860 Wiehle Avenue
Reston Virginia
Ten lockers are located at the southwest corner of the park and ride lot near the Fairfax Connector Store

I see lockers at other locations (e.g. Metro Stations and other park and ride lots) but you only list two locations. How do I rent a locker at these other locations?

Both the Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA) and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) lease bicycle lockers too.  WMATA provides lockers at most Metrorail stations.  You can get additional information about these lockers by calling the WMATA Bicycle Information Line 24 hours a day at (202) 962-1116.  VDOT leases lockers at state-owned/maintained park and ride lots in Fairfax County as well as Prince William and Loudoun Counties.  For Information and availability, contact VDOT’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Coordinator at (703) 383-2233.

Not sure?  Give us a call at (703) 324-BIKE (2453) or use our contact form and we’ll help you get started.

Is there a waiting list?

Currently there is no waiting list, lockers are available at both county facilities.

How much does it cost?

The yearly rental fee is $60, that is just $5 per month.  In addition, there is a one-time administrative fee of $10 and a key deposit of $50 (refundable when you return your key). So the total due for a first time user is $120, after that it is just $60 per year to continue to rent the locker.  Please make checks payable to Fairfax County, do not send cash with your application.

How do I apply for a locker?

Download and print the PDF version of the Bicycle Locker Application and the Bicycle Locker User Agreement. Please note that Adobe® Reader® software is required to view PDF files. Mail the completed forms to:

Fairfax County Department of Transportation

12055 Government Center Parkway
Suite 1034
Fairfax, VA 22035-5511

Can I apply and pay online?

Not yet.  We do intend to have a web-based application and payment system option in the future, but currently, you’ll have to submit your completed application, user agreement and payment by mail.

Why is the key deposit so much?

Fairfax County specs their bicycle lockers with a highly secure key system.  It costs a little more but it provides enhanced security for the user.  Therefore, replacement costs are higher, and, if you run off with the key, we need to do a whole lot of work to make the locker safe and secure for the next user.  The moral of the story…return your key when the lease expires.

Who has access to my bicycle locker?

You and the bicycle locker manager.  The Fairfax County Department of Transportation reserves the right to inspect and maintain the lockers and make sure they are being used for their intended purpose.  Believe it or not, there have been cases of people using them to store everything but a bicycle.

What do I do if I experience a problem with my locker?

If the locker is vandalized and/or a theft has occurred, please notify Fairfax County Police at their non-emergency phone number (703) 691-2131.   If there is a maintenance problem (e.g. lock jammed, door sticking, etc.), call (703) 324-BIKE (2453) or use our contact form to notify us.

The bicycle lockers are owned and operated by the Fairfax County Department of Transportation.
