Guaranteed Ride Home Program

What is the GRH Program?

The Guaranteed Ride Home Program (GRH) is for commuters who regularly take the bus, rail, vanpool, carpool, bike or walk to work. GRH is designed to serve commuters who are worried about how they'll get home when an emergency arises. GRH provides you with a ride home in the event of an unexpected personal or family emergency, personal or family illness, or when required to work unscheduled overtime. Sorry, GRH cannot be used for weather emergencies, or acts of God. Eligible Commuters may use the GRH program a maximum of four times per year. The GRH program is designed specifically for unexpected emergencies. It may not be used for personal errands, scheduled appointments, business-related travel or working late without a supervisor's request. Knowing there's a guaranteed ride home allows you to use commuting options, such as public transportation, carpools and vanpools with confidence.

Who is Eligible?

  • Ridesharers (carpoolers, vanpoolers)
  • Mass transit users (bus, train)
  • Bicyclists
  • Walkers

To be eligible for the GRH program, you must:

  1. Register by using the easy GRH Application or call 1-800-745-RIDE (7433) to request a paper application.
  2. Use an alternate commute mode to your job at least three times a week.
  3. Use an alternate commute mode on the day you request a GRH.
  4. Work in the Washington Metropolitan Area, as defined by the Metropolitan Statistical Area for Washington, D.C.
  5. Register in Commuter Connections ridesharing database.

How to Register

You can register with our easy GRH Application or call 1-800-745-RIDE (7433). After we receive your application, a Commuter ID card with a personal registration number will be returned to you along with participation guidelines. Please read these guidelines carefully, since they will explain how the program works. Keep the wallet card handy at your work site to use GRH services.

If an emergency arises on a day that you use an alternative commute, call 1-800-745-RIDE. The dispatch service is open Monday through Friday (except holidays) from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Be prepared to give your registration number from your Commuter ID card. The hours of our dispatching service have been designed to best serve employees working unexpected overtime or with sudden personal or family emergencies. A network of taxis providers, rental cars and public transit, will take you to your destination quickly and safely. The dispatch determines the best method to get you to your destination. If an emergency occurs before you have registered, you may use GRH one time, but must register before you are eligible to use GRH again.
