Express Lanes ( formerly named HOT Lanes) are
dedicated high-occupancy/toll traffic lanes designed to provide a
predictable trip on the Capital Beltway in Virginia, from the
Springfield Interchange to just north of the Dulles Toll Road
- They will be completed in late 2012 and will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week
- High-occupancy vehicles (3 or more people) may use the 495 Express Lanes for free and others will pay a variable toll rate
-
Express Lanes will be free for:
- Carpools, Vanpools (with three or more people)
- Buses
- Motorcycles
- Emergency vehicles
- There are no toll booths on the 495 Express Lanes; tolls are collected electronically at highway speeds
- Drivers on the 495 Express Lanes will need to have an E-ZPass® or a new E-ZPass® Flex transponder (available summer 2012)
- The cost of the toll will depend on how many cars are currently using the 495 Express Lanes
